ABOUT ME
My journey into baking x chemistry
Perhaps with a similar experience to many of you, I started my baking journey during Covid lockdown, when the need to control the spread of virus made it impossible to go to restaurants, schools and basically anywhere other than your house. That’s when I realised that if I want something, I have to create it myself. I was 13 then and beginning with simple sponge cakes and cookies, I slowly made my way to more fancy and decorative cakes and desserts. As much as I enjoy the baked goods, I enjoy the baking process and seeing how basic ingredients can turn into such delicate desserts equally. It is the way that the desserts I make can light up people’s faces which encourages me to continue baking.
As well as a keen baker, I am also a keen chemist. Currently studying my chemistry A level, I feel that studying the A level content does not satisfy my eagerness in learning more about chemical reactions around us and how things work. So I decided to explore the chemistry behind baking, to expand on my knowledge of baking science. As I do more research, I realised that learning about the chemistry behind baking could also greatly improve my baking skills, at the same time raising my awareness on the impact of different ingredients on our health at a molecular level. Hence, I want to share what I have learnt with you, I hope you will find this as interesting as I did and will be able to use this knowledge to improve your baking results!
